Use Photoshop To Generate Favicon

Photoshop does’nt support ico format directly, so we need to install a plugin TELEGRAPHICS ICO PLUGIN.

Now create a new square file of 16*16px or 64*64 px anything you want, creating somewhat bigger size will make you feel comfortable to draw your icon. If you already have you logo ready you can also open it in photoshop crop it to make it square, you can also use transparent background for your icon.

Opened a gif file in photoshop and made it square with transparent background

Go to Image > Image Size in menubar and resize it to 16*16px

Resize Icon to 16*16px

Go to File > Save As in menubar and save it as ico

Save the file in ico format

Meta tags are not all that important anymore. The important thing is to have the keywords of your website included in the content of your website, a good density level. For a general rule of thumb, per 500 words of content, you should have your key word present 7-10 times. If you do this, the search engines spiders will surely visit your website.

Most browsers will look for favicon.ico in the root of your site if one isn’t specified in the head section of your HTML. That is why it is showing up, even though you haven’t changed your HTML. Thanks

I agree the favicon is important for any serious website - in fact your web page will look odd with out one! It has to look good and as you say reflect the website I create mine on 16 x 16 and was unaware some browsers read 32 x 32 for favorites.

Microsoft Internet Explorer only supports the ICO file format; simply changing the filename extension of an image to .ico without converting it to an ICO file will result in an error and not displaying the favicon. Netscape 7, Internet Explorer 5, and version 6 browsers will only display the favicon when the page is bookmarked and not simply when the page is visited as in modern browsers.
